XL2001: Data Validation Fails When Data Type Is Previously Selected (272881)

When you set the validation criteria for a column in a list, and then type a value that does not meet the validation criteria in a cell in that column, the data is accepted as valid.
CAUSE
This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:
- You select a data type in the Column Settings dialog box, prior to setting the validation criteria.
- and -
- You select one of the following data types:
- Whole number
- Decimal
- List
- Date
- Time
- Text length
WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, follow these steps:
- Click any cell in a list column that is accepting data outside the existing validation criteria.
- On the List toolbar, click Column Settings, and then click Validation.
- Click the Error Alert tab, and then click to select Show error alert after invalid data is entered. Click OK twice to accept the settings.
This causes a default error message to appear whenever you type a value that does not match the validation criteria in that column.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Excel 2001 for Mac.
