Media Folder Favorites Are Installed When Made Unavailable in Group Policy (272351)

SYMPTOMS

When you add the Wmp.adm file to Administrative Templates in a Group Policy, and you choose the Do not install the default Windows Media Player Favorites in Media folder policy, the policy does not take effect.

RESOLUTION

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  2. Click HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
  3. On the Registry menu, click Load Hive. Go to %SystemDrive%\Documents and Settings\Default User, and then click NTUser.dat.
  4. Click Open, and then type user for the name of the registry key.
  5. Within this User key, go to:

    Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders

  6. Delete the REG_SZ value Favorites.
  7. Double-click the Test key to collapse the entry, and then click Unload Hive on the Registry menu.
  8. Go to the key

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\Setup

    and modify the REG_SZ value FavoritesURLs to equal no.
  9. Delete the Media folder in %SystemDrive%\Documents and Settings\Default User\Favorites.
When a new user logs on, the Favorites list will not include the Media folder.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
