0x80040E09 Error Message Occurs When Creating a Playlist (272204)

SYMPTOMS

In Windows Media player, when you create a new playlist, and you enter a name for the playlist, when you click OK, you receive the following error message:
ErrorCode = 0x80040E09.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because you do not have the NTFS permissions to modify the following directory: Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Media Index. By default, only administrators and power users have the right to modify this folder.

NOTE: This issue occurs in NTFS partitions only; it does not occur in FAT partitions.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, perform either of the following actions:
  • Ask the administrator to change the permissions on the Media Index folder, so that a you can modify the directory.

    -or-
  • Ask the administrator to add you to the power users group.
