This article was previously published under Q271707 SYMPTOMS
Each time that you begin a sentence in a Microsoft Word 2000 document and insert a space, a hard return, a period, or a semi-colon, the first letter of the first word in the sentence (or line) is automatically capitalized.
CAUSE
The Capitalize first letter of sentences check box is enabled in the AutoCorrect feature. AutoCorrect is an automatic correction and formatting feature in Word 2000 that performs certain functions for you while you are typing.
For example, if you click to select the Correct TWo INitial CApitals check box, anytime that you accidentally capitalize the first two letters of a word, Microsoft Word corrects it for you.
The Capitalize first letter of sentences option is enabled by default. While it is on, Word capitalizes the first letter of any word that follows a period, a hard return, a semi-colon, or the first letter of single words in a list or table column.
WORKAROUND
If you do not want AutoCorrect to capitalize your words for you, use either of the following methods.
Method 1: Turn Off the "Capitalize First Letter of Sentences" Option- On the Tools menu, click AutoCorrect.
- Click the AutoCorrect tab.
- Click to clear the Capitalize first letter of sentences check box.
- Click OK.
Method 2: Use the Undo Feature
If AutoCorrect makes a change that you do not want to keep, click Undo on the Edit menu.
