XADM: Message Transfer Agent Stacks Service Incorrectly Logs an Error When It Runs in a Cluster Environment (271449)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server

This article was previously published under Q271449

SYMPTOMS

In an Exchange 2000 cluster environment, monitoring reports that the computer without the message transfer agent (MTA) running on it is in an error state.

CAUSE

Because the MTA in a cluster environment only runs on either one of the physical computers, monitoring reports that the computer without the MTA running is in an error state. The default monitoring configuration on an Exchange 2000 server includes the Microsoft Exchange MTA Stacks service. This, in turn, can cause problems if Exchange 2000 is installed on a cluster computer.

WORKAROUND

To workaround this problem,
  1. In Exchange System manager, under First Administrative Group\Servers, locate the server, and then right-click it.
  2. Click Properties, click the Monitoring tab, double-click the Default Microsoft Exchange Services, and then remove the Microsoft MTA Stacks.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server.
