Works 6: Unexpected Behavior Occurs When You Change the Color Palette Setting (270653)

SYMPTOMS

When you change the Microsoft Windows Color Palette setting from 256 Colors to High Color (16 bit), you may experience the following symptoms:
  • A loss of data

  • A General Protection Fault error message

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if an ATI Rage II video adapter is installed in your computer.

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, use one of the following methods.

Method 1

Restart your computer after you change the color palette setting.

Method 2

Windows XP

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Display.
  3. In the Display Properties dialog box, click the Settings tab, and then click the Advanced button.
  4. Click the Troubleshooting tab.
  5. Under Hardware acceleration, drag the Hardware acceleration slider to the left.
  6. Click OK two times.

Microsoft Windows 95, Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me)

  1. Quit all open applications.
  2. Click Start, click Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  3. Double-click the System icon.
  4. Select the Performance tab, and then click the Graphics button.
  5. Move the Hardware Acceleration slider to None.

    It should say No accelerator functions.
  6. Click OK, click Close, and then click Yes to reboot the system.
