XL2001: Data Adjacent to a List Cannot Be Dragged into the List (270093)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Excel 2001 for Mac
This article was previously published under Q270093 SYMPTOMS
When you attempt to move data in cells that are adjacent to the right side of a list or below the list into the list, the operation may fail and the data remains in its original location. No warning or error message is given.
CAUSE
This behavior may occur in either of the following scenarios.
Scenario 1- The selection being dragged into the list adjoins the list on the right side with no intervening columns.
-and-
- The selection has more rows than the list or extends below the list, and is dragged diagonally upward and to the left.
Scenario 2- The selection being dragged into the list is vertically below the list.
-and-
- The selection has more rows than the list.
-and-
- The selection is dragged so the insertion point is on the left border of the source column.
WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, use the method appropriate to your scenario.
Scenario 1
If the data to be inserted is directly to the right of the list, insert a blank column to the right of the list, and then move your selection. Scenario 2- If the range to be inserted is below the list and to the right of the desired list position, first move the data so that you are inserting the data in the list by dragging left across at least one intervening column.
-or-
- Select fewer rows than the number of rows in the list, drag and insert, and then select and drag again.
MORE INFORMATION
This behavior occurs by design, to deter accidental movement of data.
