  2. Select the Spelling tab.
  3. In the Custom Dictionaries dialog box, click Add.

To use the user dictionary, do the following:

  1. On the Tools menu, click Preferences.
  2. Click the Spelling icon on the left side of the dialog box.
  3. If a check mark appears to left of the dictionary name, the spelling checker will use that dictionary in the spelling process.
To activate the dictionary, click the space to the left of the dictionary name to obtain the check mark.

Word Versions 4.0 and 3.0x

The "User1" dictionary can be renamed and still accessed for spell checking in the following two ways:

  1. From the Finder, select the document named "User1" and change the name.
  2. In Word, choose Spelling from the Document menu, select User1 in the list in the Spelling window, and choose Save As from the File menu to save the dictionary under a new name.
Word versions 3.0x open only the "Main Dictionary" and "User1" dictionaries automatically. If a user dictionary is saved with a name other than "User1," you must choose Open from the File menu after choosing Spelling to open the desired dictionary.

Word version 4.0 opens up to three user dictionaries, based on which ones were open at the time you last quit Word.
