OFF2001: No Alert Received When You Get Data from Mismatched Version of FileMaker Pro Database (269913)

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to get data from a FileMaker Pro database that has been created by a different version of FileMaker Pro than the version you are currently running, the operation fails, but you do not receive an error message to inform you that the reason for the failure is the FileMaker Pro version of the database file.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs under either of the following conditions:
  • You have installed FileMaker Pro 5.0, and you attempt to access data from a FileMaker Pro 4.0 database, using either Microsoft Word or Microsoft Excel. -or-

  • You have installed FileMaker Pro 4.0, and you attempt to access data from a FileMaker Pro 5.0 database, using either Microsoft Word or Microsoft Excel.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, use a database file that was created by the same version of FileMaker Pro that you have installed on your computer.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, you can use FileMaker Pro 5.0 to open a FileMaker Pro 4.0 database and convert it to the later format. If you have a FileMaker Pro 5.0 database file, upgrade your software to the latest version.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
