OFF2001: Office Programs Quit Unexpectedly When You Insert PICT Files (269886)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Excel 2001 for Mac
- Microsoft PowerPoint 2001 for Macintosh
- Microsoft Word 2001 for Macintosh
This article was previously published under Q269886 SYMPTOMS
When you attempt to insert a corrupt Macintosh PICT image into a Word 2001 document, Excel 2001 workbook, or PowerPoint 2001 presentation, you receive an error message similar to the following:
The application "Microsoft [Word]|[Excel]|[PowerPoint]" has unexpectedly quit, because an error of type 1 occurred.
You should save your work in other open applications and restart the computer.
This also occurs when you select the corrupt file in the Choose a Picture dialog box, with the Show Preview option selected.
CAUSE
The programs mentioned in the "Symptoms" section do not check the PICT file for integrity and they are therefore unable display a warning before attempting to display it.
RESOLUTION
Corrupt PICT files may be acceptable to some graphic applications, even though most programs either issue a warning or quit unexpectedly. Find a program that accepts and opens the PICT file and that can also convert it to another graphic format. If you are successful in doing this, you can then insert the new graphic into a Microsoft Office document.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
