This article was previously published under Q269418 SYMPTOMS On a computer that is running Microsoft Windows 2000, when
you try to run the Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator (MSDTC)
Administrative Console by clicking the Start button on the taskbar, pointing to Programs, and then clicking Microsoft SQL Server 7.0, a dialog box with the following error appears:
Missing Shortcut - Windows is searching for dac.exe. To
locate the file yourself, click Browse. CAUSE In Windows 2000, the Distributed Transaction Coordinator
console is a Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in and not a separate
executable. Therefore, the DTC Admin Console (Dac.exe) is not installed on
Windows 2000. WORKAROUND To start the MSDTC Administrative console in Windows 2000,
use these steps:
- Open the MMC Console by typing MMC.exe in the Run dialog box.
- In the MMC console dialog box, click Console, and then click Add/Remove Snap-in.
- In the Add/Remove Snap-in dialog box, click Add.
- In the Add Standalone Snap-in dialog box, click Component Services, and then click ADD to add the snap-in. Click Close.
- In the Add/Remove Snap-in dialog box, click OK.
- In the console root under Component Services, expand Component Services, point to Computers, point to My Computer, and then click Distributed Transaction Coordinator.
