SideWinder: Error message: You must be an administrator for this machine to install the SideWinder software (269151)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install the Microsoft SideWinder Game Controller software on a Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer or on a Microsoft Windows XP-based computer, you may receive the following error message:
You must be an administrator for this machine to install the SideWinder software.

Press OK to exit Setup.
When you click OK, Setup quits.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if you are not logged on to the computer as an Administrator.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, log off from the computer, and then log on to the computer as an Administrator.

If you are using Windows XP, and you are logged on as Administrator but you still receive the error message, change the compatibility mode to Microsoft Windows 98. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Insert the SideWinder Game Controller installation CD while you hold down the SHIFT key on the keyboard.
  2. Click Start, and then point to My Computer.
  3. Right-click your CD drive, and then click Explore.
  4. Right-click setup.exe, and then click Properties.
  5. Click the Compatibility tab.
  6. Click to select the Run this program in compatibility mode check box.
  7. Click Windows98/Windows Me from the drop-down box.
  8. Click OK.
Start the installation from the Setup.exe file that you modified.
