SYMPTOMS

On a domain controller, member server, or workstation in a Microsoft Windows 2000 Active Directory domain, the Sharing tab of the Printer Properties dialog box displays the following error message below the List in the Directory check box:
The Directory operation is still in progress.

CAUSE

The Domain Name System (DNS) server address in the TCP/IP settings of the computer is not set correctly or the DNS server is not set up correctly.

RESOLUTION

You must correct the DNS setting so that it points to a DNS server that contains a copy of the DNS zone for the Active Directory domain.

MORE INFORMATION

Active directory is unable to resolve the location of the Active Directory resources from the DNS server and is continuing to attempt to contact a Domain Controller to publish the printer.
