SUMMARY

Windows Media Player automatically compresses CD tracks when you copy them to a hard disk. This article describes how to adjust the compression setting for copying CD music tracks to a hard disk.

MORE INFORMATION

Copying a CD to a hard disk can use up to several hundred megabytes (MB) of disk space, depending on the amount of content on the CD. To use less space on the hard disk, you can select a higher compression setting. Note that there may be some loss of audio quality at higher compression rates. The better the audio quality, the more disk space is required.

To view or modify the compression settings before you copy the CD tracks:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. Click the CD Audio tab.
  3. Move the Copy music at this quality slider to the appropriate setting, and then click OK.
The following table lists the approximate amount of disk space used for the various settings.

QualityBit rateDisk space*
Smallest Size64 Kbps28 MB
Medium96 Kbps42 MB
High128 Kbps56 MB
Best Quality160 Kbps69 MB

* Indicates the estimated amount of hard disk space required to copy an entire music CD at this quality level. The actual size depends on both the compression setting and the length of the music.
