This article was previously published under Q266780

SUMMARY

The Windows Media Encoder currently supports live capturing through the following types of devices:
  • Video Capture Cards
  • Digital Video through IEEE 1394
  • USB Capture Devices
For a Video Capture Card to be compatible with the Windows Media Encoder, it must meet the following requirements:
  • Support the VFW or WDM driver model
  • Be able to capture uncompressed audio data and video data in one of the supported pixel formats

MORE INFORMATION

A complete list of supported hardware can be found on the following Web page: At the time this article was published, due to processor limitations, IEEE 1394 is only supported through the Osprey 500 card.

A lot of what can be captured through a capture device is dependant on the driver. Some drivers support multiple cards in one computer and others do not. If the driver does not support multiple instances, the video sources drop-down list only displays one instance of the device.

As with previous versions of the Windows Media Encoder, Motion JPEG capture cards are not supported.
