PRJ2000: "Project Too Large" Error Selecting Views in Microsoft Project Central for a Project Saved to a Shared Folder (265703)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Project 2000

This article was previously published under Q265703

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project Central, when you select a portfolio view to view a project stored in an .mpp file, you may receive the following error message:
VBScript: Microsoft Project Central

An error occurred while trying to access the project on the public share. Either the project is too large, or the Microsoft Project Central server may not have access to this public share, or the share may not be available. Contact the server administrator.

CAUSE

This error message may occur when any of the following conditions is true:
  1. Anonymous access is not selected for the ProjectCentral virtual directory.
  2. The project file is saved to a network share on a computer other than the server, and the ProjectCentral virtual directory is using the IUSR account for anonymous access.
  3. The Domain\Username used for anonymous access to the ProjectCentral and MSADC virtual directories does not have access to the shared folder, or the password has expired.
  4. The NTFS file system permissions on the shared folder where the .mpp files are stored do not allow full control to the Domain\Username used for anonymous access to the Microsoft Project Central virtual directory, or do not allow full control to the users trying to gain access to the shared folder.
  5. The MSADC virtual directory does not have the correct Application Name setting and path to the physical MSADC folder.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, use the appropriate methods for your situation.

Resolution for Causes 1 and 2

NOTE: For Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) to implement the changes described in "Part 1: Allow Anonymous Access and Enter a Valid Username," you must then also follow "Part 2: Cycle the IIS Administrative Services," to stop and restart the administrative services for IIS. If you are hosting other Web sites, this process disconnects all users currently using Microsoft Project Central, or other Web sites hosted on the system. If you are not sure whether the server is hosting multiple Web sites, contact the server administrator before you begin the following procedures.

Part 1: Allow Anonymous Access and Enter a Valid Username

Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) 4.0 and 5.0:

For IIS 4.0 and 5.0, follow these steps:
  1. Open Internet Service Manager.
  2. Click the + symbol next to the computer name.

NOTE: If you are using Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, you must first expand the Internet Information Services folder.
  3. Click the + symbol next to Default Web Site.
  4. Right-click the ProjectCentral virtual directory.
  5. Click Properties on the shortcut menu.
  6. Click the Directory Security tab.
  7. Under Anonymous Access and Authentication Control, click Edit.
  8. Under Anonymous Access, click Edit.
  9. In the Username box, type an account name in the Domain\Username format.
  10. Under the Password box, click to clear the Allow IIS to Control Password check box (in Microsoft Windows 2000). In Microsoft Windows NT Server, this check box is called Enable Automatic Password Synchronization.
  11. In the Password box, type the corresponding password for the user name.
  12. Click OK.
  13. Retype the password when you are prompted, and click OK. Click OK again, and then click Apply.
NOTE: If the steps described in this article do not resolve the issue, and the server is not serving up any other Web sites, there is another possible resolution. Repeat steps 1 through 13 above, but change step 3 to "Right-click Default Web Site," and skip step 4. If you are unsure if the server is handling other Web sites, contact the server administrator.

Part 2: Cycle the IIS Administrative Services

Use the appropriate method for your version of IIS.

Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) 5.0:

For IIS 5.0, follow these steps:
  1. Open a management console for IIS 5.0.
  2. Right-click the computer name, and then click Restart IIS on the shortcut menu.
  3. On the next screen, make sure that the Restart Internet Services on computer name check box is selected.
  4. Click OK.

The services begin to shut down and restart.
  5. When this process is completed, quit the management console.
Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) 4.0:

For IIS 4.0, follow these steps:
  1. To stop all IIS-related services, type NET STOP IISADMIN /Y at the command prompt.

This stops IIS Admin Service and all dependent services.

Below is an example of the output you see after you type this command (the dependent services listed on your computer may vary):
The following services are dependent on the IIS Admin Service service.
Stopping the IIS Admin Service will also stop these services.

       FTP Publishing Service
       Microsoft NNTP Service
       Microsoft SMTP Service
       World Wide Web Publishing Service

A message is then displayed as each service is successfully stopped.
  2. At the command prompt, type the NET START command to restart the IIS-related services you use, and press ENTER.

For example, to restart the World Wide Web service, type NET START W3SVC.
  3. Determining service names:

To determine the service names, start Registry Editor (type Regedit.exe or Regedt32.exe) and go to the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services

  4. Under the Services key, the service name that works with the NET STOP and NET START commands is listed.

NOTE: For each service, there is also a Display Name value, which is the name listed under Services in Control Panel, and in the messages displayed after you run the NET STOP and NET START commands. However, you cannot use these display names as a parameter with the NET STOP and NET START commands.
Common IIS-related Services:

Service NameDisplay Name
IisadminIIS Admin Service
Msftpsvc FTP Publishing Service
Nntpsvc Microsoft NNTP Service
SmtpsvcMicrosoft SMTP Service
W3svc World Wide Web Publishing Service

Resolution for Cause 3

The domain account that you specify for anonymous access must have access to the network share where the project file is stored.

If the account password is expired, you must manually update the password in IIS. To manually update the password, follow the steps listed in the "Resolution for Causes 1 and 2" section.

If the password is not expired, follow the steps listed in the "Resolution for Cause 4" section.

Resolution for Cause 4

If the public share where the project .mpp files are stored is on an NTFS partition, you must set the permissions for Anonymous access Domain\Username to at least Read. Any other users who need to gain access from Microsoft Project Central portfolio views, must also have Read permissions.

To allow full control, follow these steps:
  1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Explore on the shortcut menu.
  2. Right-click the shared folder, and then click Sharing on the shortcut menu.
  3. On the Sharing tab, click Permissions.

NOTE: By default, when you share a folder, the Everyone group is granted full control, and may appear in the permissions window.
  4. Click Add.
  5. Type the Domain\Username for the Anonymous Access account that has been entered in IIS, and click OK.
  6. Click to select the Allow check box for Read permissions, and then click OK
  7. Repeat steps 4 through 6 for any other users that will be viewing project files from Microsoft Project Central portfolio views, or add the Everyone group and assign it Read permissions.
  8. Click OK twice.

Resolution for Cause 5

If the MSADC virtual directory does not have the correct application name and starting point, the MDAC components are not available.

To correct the application name and starting point, follow these steps:
  1. Open Internet Service Manager.
  2. Click the + symbol next to the computer name.

NOTE: If you are using Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, you must first expand the Internet Information Services folder.
  3. Click the + symbol next to Default Web Site.
  4. Right-click the MSADC virtual directory, and then click Properties on the shortcut menu.
  5. Click the Virtual Directory tab.
  6. For the Local Path settings, click Browse, and confirm that the system is pointing to the following path:

    drive:\program files\common files\system\msadc

  7. In the Application Settings dialog box, the Application Name setting needs to be MSADC. If the setting is blank, click Create to have MSADC appear.

NOTE: If you see the Remove button, click it first. The button text changes to Create, and you can click this button to set the application name.
The Starting Point setting is now:

<Default Web Site>\MSADC
