Ntoskrnl and NTFS Performance Changes for Services for UNIX (265069)

The Compaq Emerging Technologies Group, in partnership with Microsoft, is developing a Network Attached Storage system that will advertise vast amounts of storage on a network. This joint development effort has uncovered an issue in Windows 2000 wherein file storage performance is not up to expectations in Microsoft Services for UNIX (SFU). As a result, Ntoskrnl and the NTFS file system have been improved, increasing SFU performance by approximately eight times.
CAUSE
To achieve optimal performance, SFU needs certain information from the file system. There is no system call that returns this information.

STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 2.
