XL97: Excel Quits Unexpectedly When You Paste Array Formulas into Merged Cells (264864)

SYMPTOMS

When you copy a cell range that contains an array formula, and you paste it to another range that contains merged cells, Excel stops responding, and you receive an error message similar to the following:
The instruction at "0x300d83b6" referenced memory at "0x00000010". The memory could not be "read".

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when you paste the cell range as formulas (on the Edit menu, click Paste Special, and then click Formulas in the Paste Special dialog box).

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, clear the formats of the destination cell range before you paste the formulas. (On the Edit menu, point to Clear, and then click Formats.)

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1/SR-1a.
