SYMPTOMS

When you try to insert a Discussion In the Document into a Microsoft Office 2000 document in Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0, you may receive the following error message:
Error showing inline discussion markers:

Cannot insert inline discussions in non-HTML documents.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if the Office document is not in HTML format.

An inline discussion relates to a specific paragraph, table, or graphic. You start an inline discussion directly in a document. After you insert the first remark, a Discussion icon appears at the end of the text, table, or graphic. You and other reviewers can view and edit comments in the Discussion pane.
