SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to play audio through the Maestro ESS 2E sound card, the computer may stop responding (hang).

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you perform a clean install of Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me) in APM mode.

RESOLUTION

Install the sound card driver that was in use before the clean install of Millennium Edition. If you don't have the driver, download it from your hardware vendor's Web site or contact them by phone.

MORE INFORMATION

This behavior is known to occur when using the Millennium-provided driver in APM mode. Millennium Edition installs in APM mode instead of ACPI mode on computers that have a BIOS date earlier than 12/1/99. The issue is normally seen only on a clean install because Me must supply its own driver for the sound card. During an upgrade from a previous operating system, Me does not install its driver if a working driver is already in place.
