Changing Internet Explorer Proxy Settings Causes Blank Space in Domain Name (264551)

SYMPTOMS

When you change any setting in the Proxy Server section of the Connection tab in the Internet Options dialog box, selecting a Dial-Up Networking entry and then clicking Settings can cause you to be unable to connect to your Internet service provider (ISP).

CAUSE

The Domain Name box of the changed Dial-Up Networking entry is set to a blank space if the field was empty. You cannot see this in the Internet Options dialog box, but you can see it in the properties for the Dial-Up Networking connection.

RESOLUTION

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Internet Explorer service pack that contains this hotfix.

WORKAROUND

Using Dial-Up Networking, delete the blank space from the Domain Name box manually.
