This article describes summary display information for Exchange 2000 Server queues and the role this information plays in troubleshooting and resolving issues that involve backed up queues.

Queues is displayed under every Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) virtual server and Microsoft message transfer agent (MTA) (X.400) object in your organization, as well as under every installed Microsoft Exchange Connector for Novell GroupWise, Microsoft Exchange Connector for Lotus cc:Mail, and Microsoft Exchange Connector for Lotus Notes.

When you click Queues, all system queues and link queues that are currently on that SMTP virtual server, Microsoft MTA object, or connector are displayed. Depending on your messaging deployment and other variables, each of the following fields can be useful when you are troubleshooting message flow problems. Use this information whenever you need to perform queue management.

The following information is displayed in the Details pane when you click Queues:
  • Connection State. This information is usually the first indication that a queue is not functioning properly.For additional information about connection states, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

  • Time of Submission of Oldest Msg. Displays the time that the oldest message in the queue was sent by the client.
  • Total # of Msgs. A large number of messages can indicate that there is a connection problem.
  • Total Msg Size (KB). This is the total size in kilobytes (KB) of all messages in the queue. Be aware that large messages can clog your system.
  • Time of Next Connection Retry. When the state of a queue is Retry, the Time of Next Connection Retry field indicates the time that another connection attempt will be made. You can use the Force Connection command to attempt to make a connection immediately.
