SYMPTOMS

On a computer that has Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional installed, you can administer group membership by clicking the Users and Passwords icon in Control Panel. When you select a local user, you can edit its properties and also see a Group Membership tab. The Group Membership tab has the following options:
  • Standard User
  • Restricted User
  • Other (List of all Local Groups)
If the Other option is selected and then a Local Group is chosen from the list, all other group memberships for this user are deleted. If you make the user a member of a local group through this dialog box, all other group memberships are deleted. This may prevent the user from logging on locally if that right is given only to a group to which this user no longer belongs.

WORKAROUND

To avoid this issue, use the Computer Management tool to add users to groups such as Users or Power Users.
