SYMPTOMS

When you are using the Microsoft Fax service in Windows , the Fax Service snap-in displays only the first two fax-capable devices in the Devices section for Windows 2000 and the first four fax-capable devices in Windows Server 2003. This behavior occurs even if there are more than two devices in Windows 2000 and more then 4 devices in Windows Server 2003 capable of sending and receiving faxes.

CAUSE

The Microsoft Fax service is intended as a client-side faxing solution, and was developed to handle only two devices.

RESOLUTION

The order of installation dictates which devices are listed in the Fax Service snap-in. If you have multiple devices, choose the set you want to appear in the Fax Service snap-in, and then install those devices on unique ports on the computer first. If the devices are already installed but not in the order you want, you can uninstall them and then reinstall them in the correct order.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
