UPS Goes into Battery Calibration Mode During a Windows 2000 Installation When UPS Is in Smart Signaling Mode (259884)

SYMPTOMS

When you install Windows 2000, certain uninterruptible power supplies (UPSs) that are in Smart Signaling mode may go into Battery Calibration mode. This behavior may cause the battery to drain.

CAUSE

This problem can occur when Window 2000 tries to detect a serial mouse during setup. When this occurs, Windows sends a "D" to the serial port, which causes some UPSs to go into Battery Calibration mode.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, disconnect the UPS before you run Setup from a CD-ROM installation. If you are deploying Windows by using an unattended installation, replace the Seupldr.bin file in the I386 folder with the Setupldr.bin file that is provided in this hotfix.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 2.
