SUMMARY

NOTE: This article applies to laptop computers with a built-in video adapter that supports the internal LCD monitor and one or more external monitors.

Windows 2000 supports Image Color Management (ICM) technology. You can associate an ICM profile with each monitor defined in the system. Under normal circumstances, monitors and adapters exist in a 1:1 ratio. That is, there is one monitor per video adapter. With laptop computers, this is not necessarily the case. The standard method of associating ICM profiles with monitors does not take into account the multiple-monitor-per-adapter scenario.

The Color Management tab in the Monitor tool in Control Panel displays only a single monitor and allows the modification of only the ICM profile for that monitor. Even if an adapter supports more than one monitor, you can use the Monitor tool to view and alter only the ICM profile that is associated with the first monitor on the adapter.

MORE INFORMATION

Although the standard method of working with ICM profiles is not available, you can verify that a specific profile is associated with a monitor.

ICM profiles are stored in the %SystemRoot%\System32\Spool\Drivers\Color folder. To determine if a specific ICM profile is associated with a monitor:
  1. Use Windows Explorer to open the %SystemRoot%\System32\Spool\Drivers\Color folder.
  2. Right-click the ICM profile you want to examine, and then click Associate.
If there is a monitor associated with the profile, it appears in the Associated Devices box on the Associate Device tab. If no monitor is associated with the profile, the box is empty.
