This article was previously published under Q259748 SYMPTOMS
In Microsoft Project, when you try to open a file, you may see the following behavior, depending on your operating system. NOTE: Under all operating systems, you may also see the words "Requesting virus scan" displayed briefly in the Microsoft Project status bar.
Microsoft Windows 95 or Microsoft Windows 98
You receive the following error message:
This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.
If you click Details, you see an error message similar to the following:
WINPROJ caused an invalid page fault in module NAVENG32.DLL at address.
Microsoft Windows NT 4.0
You receive the following error message:
An application error has occurred and an application error log is being generated.
Winproj.exe
Exception: access violation (0xc0000005), Address: address Microsoft Windows 2000
Microsoft Project may quit unexpectedly without an error message, or you may receive the following message:
WINPROJ.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program.
An error log is being created.
CAUSE
This behavior may occur when you have Norton AntiVirus 2000 installed on your computer.
NOTE: The file that failed to open is not damaged in any way as a result of this problem.
Norton Antivirus 2000 includes a plug-in component for Microsoft Office 2000 that requests a virus scan whenever a Microsoft Office 2000 program opens a file. In Microsoft Project 2000, this component causes the behavior described in the "Symptoms" section.
WORKAROUND
This behavior may not occur if you use Windows Explorer or My Computer to locate and open your project files, rather than opening them from within Microsoft Project.
To avoid this behavior, unregister the Norton AntiVirus OfficeAV.dll plug-in component. To do this, follow these steps:
- On the Start menu, click Run.
- In the Open box, type the appropriate command for your system, and then click OK.
For Windows 95/98 with Only Norton Antivirus Installed: regsvr32 /u "c:\program files\norton antivirus\officeav.dll" For Windows 95/98 with Norton SystemWorks Installed: regsvr32 /u "c:\norton systemworks\norton antivirus\officeav.dll" For Windows NT or Windows 2000: regsvr32 /u "c:\program files\navnt\officeav.dll"
If the command is successful, you see the message:
"DllUnregisterServer in C:\path\OfficeAV.dll succeeded."
NOTE: If the command is unsuccessful, search the hard disk for the file. The file might be located in a different folder.
