Application May Not Open Handle to Plug and Play Device Connected to a USB Hub (259711)

SYMPTOMS

When you remove a Plug and Play Universal Serial Bus (USB) hub (a surprise removal) and an application does not close the handle to a device connected to the hub, the application may not open the handle to the device when you plug in the USB hub again.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the USB driver does not correctly handle the surprise removal of Plug and Play USB devices.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, close the device handle when the application receives a "Device Removal" notification message.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Windows 2000.

This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 1.
