SUMMARY

This article describes how to mailbox-enable existing users in a Windows 2000-based domain after you install Exchange 2000 Server.

MORE INFORMATION

A Windows 2000-based user object that has a mailbox associated with it is referred to as mailbox-enabled. A mailbox is an area of an Exchange server's information store database where a user's private messages are stored. Mailbox-enabled users can also send and receive messages.

To mailbox-enable each user, follow these steps:
  1. On the Windows taskbar, click the Start button, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Active Directory Users and Computers.
  2. Click to expand the Active Directory Users and Computers snap-in, and then click yourdomain.
  3. Click the Users container, and then, in the right pane, right-click an existing user.
  4. Click Exchange Tasks to start the Exchange Task Wizard, and then click Next.
  5. In the Exchange Task Wizard, click Create Mailbox, and then click Next.
  6. In the Create Exchange Mailbox dialog box:

    1. In the Alias box, confirm or change the alias user name.
    2. Under Server, click the Exchange 2000 server where you want to create the mailbox. By default, this server is the current Exchange Organization/First Administrative Group/Exchange server.
    3. Under Mailbox Store, click the information store where you want to store messages for this mailbox. By default, this is the First Storage Group/Mailbox Store on the current Exchange server.
  7. Click Next.
  8. In the Task in Progress dialog box, after the process is complete, click Next.
  9. In the Complete the Exchange Task Wizard dialog box, in the Task Summary area, confirm that the task is complete and that the X.500 address is correct.
