PRB: Application Error Occurs When Installing Visual Studio 6.0 After Installing Oracle (259704)

When you install Visual Studio 6.0 with the Oracle database product present, the installation may halt after the Visual Studio splash screen has appeared and may report the following error message (in which xxxxxxxxx represents a memory address):
VS6Wiz.exe application error
The instruction at xxxxxxxxx referenced memory at xxxxxxxxx the memory could not be written.
CAUSE
Performance counters prevent the VS60wiz.exe file setup program from continuing.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem:
- Temporarily rename the ORANT folder on your hard drive to a different name. For example, ORANTX.
- Stop all Oracle-related Services and Processes, or boot in to SAFE MODE.
- Install Visual Studio 6.0.
- Rename the ORANTX folder back to its original name.
