Backup Files Take More Space Than Expected (259680)

SYMPTOMS

When you create a backup by using the Backup.exe tool that is included with Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me), the number of files and amount of space used by the backup are larger than estimated by Msbackup.exe.

Or, when you restore a backup that includes the _Restore folder, you receive several messages stating that files cannot be restored.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if System Restore is enabled during the backup process. If System Restore is enabled during a backup, System Restore saves the temporary backup files. In addition, if you back up the _Restore folder, the files that System Restore saves from the temporary backup files are also backed up.

RESOLUTION

To prevent the temporary backup files from being saved by System Restore and to decrease the backup size, do not back up the _Restore folder. To prevent the _Restore folder from being backed up, click the plus sign (+) next to drive C in Backup, and then click to clear the check box next to the _Restore folder.
