SYMPTOMS

When you press CAPS LOCK, NUM LOCK or SHIFT LOCK while the ToggleKeys feature is enabled, it may generate a muffled sound, instead of the expected louder "ding" sound.

CAUSE

This problem can occur after you upgrade to Windows 98 Second Edition.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem:
  1. Insert your original Windows 98 Second Edition CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive.
  2. Double-click My Computer, double-click your CD-ROM drive, and then open the Tools\MTSutil\Fixspkr folder.
  3. Right-click the Fixspkr.inf file, and then click Install.

NOTE: You can instead select the file, press SHIFT+F10, press DOWN ARROW to select Install, and then press ENTER to accomplish this step.
  4. Restart your computer.
NOTE: When the computer is started after you install the Fixspkr.inf file, the Fixspkr.exe tool is run from the following RunServices registry key:

"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices","FixSpkr",,"%10%\fixspkr.exe

When this happens, an MS-DOS window opens, a beep sound is played, and the window then closes.

STATUS
