You receive an "Error 1328. Error applying patch to file <admin image path>\SETUP.EXE" error message when you apply the Office 2000 SR-1 update to your Office 2000 administrative installation (259554)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Office 2000 (Setup) Service Release 1 (SR-1)
This article was previously published under Q259554 SYMPTOMS When you apply the Microsoft Office 2000 Service Release 1
(SR-1) Administrator Update to an Office 2000 administrative installation, you
may receive the following error message: Error 1328.
Error applying patch to file <admin image path>\SETUP.EXE. It has
probably been updated by other means, and can no longer be modified by this
patch. For more information contact your patch vendor. If you click Cancel, the update of your administrative installation is canceled. If
you did not turn off (disable) Rollback, your administrative installation
returns to its original state. If you click Ignore, the update of your administrative installation continues.
However, Setup.exe on your administrative installation will not be updated.
CAUSE You receive this error message if both of the following are
true:
- You replaced the original version of Setup.exe (9.0.2611)
on your administrative installation with the enhanced version of Setup.exe
(9.0.2720) that is available on the Office Resource Kit (ORK) Web
site.
- You applied the SR-1 Administrator Update to your
administrative installation.
NOTE: This problem also occurs for any other Office program in which
you replaced the original Setup.exe file with the enhanced version of Setup.exe
from the ORK, and you applied the relevant SR-1 Update for that program. For
example, you can receive this error message when you update an administrative
installation of Office 2000 CD2 with the Data2.msp file. RESOLUTION To resolve this problem, follow the steps that are
appropriate for your situation. If You Clicked Ignore to the Error Message If you allowed the update of your administrative installation to
continue by clicking Ignore to the error message, follow these steps:
- Rename the existing copy of Setup.exe on your
administrative installation to EnhSetup.exe.
- Download the Setupsr1.exe file from the following Microsoft
Web site:
- Double-click Setupsr1.exe to extract the Setup.exe file. The default folder to extract this
file to is C:\Program Files\ORKTools\Download\Tools\Setup.
- Copy Setup.exe from this folder to your administrative
installation.
- Apply the SR-1 Administrator Update to your administrative
installation again.
If You Clicked Cancel to the Error Message If you stopped the update of your administrative installation by
clicking Cancel to the error message, or if you did not apply the SR-1
Administrator Update, follow these steps:
- Check the version of Setup.exe on your administrative
installation.
- If the version of Setup.exe is 9.0.2720, rename Setup.exe
to EnhSetup.exe. If the version of Setup.exe is 9.0.2611, skip to step 4.
- Copy Setup.exe from your Office CD to your administrative
installation.
- Apply the SR-1 Administrator Update to your Office 2000
administrative installation.

additional information about applying the SR-1 Administrator Update, click the

OFF2000: How to Obtain and Apply the SR-1/SR-1a Update to Administrative Installations
STATUSMicrosoft
has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed
at the beginning of this article.
MORE INFORMATION If you clicked Ignore to the error message in the "Symptoms" section of this article,
the update of your administrative installation is not complete. This is because
the copy of Setup.exe was not updated with the SR-1 version. The SR-1 version
contains all of the updates previously available in the enhanced version of
Setup.exe (9.0.2720) as well as new functionality necessary to correctly update
existing client installations of Office 2000 to Office 2000 SR-1.
Neither the original version of Setup.exe nor the enhanced version of Setup.exe
can update existing installations to SR-1. This is why it is important to use
the appropriate steps provided in the "Resolution" section of this article.
