Error Message: Site Server Content Deployment Service is Not Running (259465)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Site Server 3.0

This article was previously published under Q259465

SYMPTOMS

When you click the Server Name icon under the Publishing section in the Microsoft Management Console (MMC), or when you open the Publishing link in the browser of the Site Server Web Administration site, the following error message is displayed:
"Server xxx(servername) is available, but the Site Server Content Deployment service is not running"
NOTE: All other functions of the Site Server Administration MMC and the Web Site Server Web Administration site that are installed with publishing function properly.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because TCP port 507, required by the Content Deployment service, is restricted or blocked on the server.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, remove the block on TCP port 507.

MORE INFORMATION

TCP port restriction in the Advanced TCP setting is used to secure workgroup servers. There are certain TCP ports that require permission to ensure the proper function of the server.

To verify the TCP port status from a Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Server-based computer, perform the following steps:
  1. In Control Panel, click Network, click Protocols, and then select TCP/IP Properties.
  2. Click the Advanced tab. Verify that the Enable Security check box is selected. If it is not selected, then port security is not enabled. If it is selected, then click Configure.... Verify that port 507 is permitted in the TCP Port column.
  3. Restart the computer.
If TCP port 507 is not in the permitted list, then the Site Server Web Administration site only displays the links to Content Management, and not the Content Deployment link.

Only TCP ports are required for general Content Replication System (CRS), while UDP port restriction is not effected.
