Microsoft Exchange Connector for POP3 Mailboxes Does Not Download Mail and Event ID 8001 Is Displayed (259461)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server 4.5
This article was previously published under Q259461 SYMPTOMS
Microsoft Small Business Server (SBS) Exchange Connector for POP3 Mailboxes may not download new messages if Domain Name System (DNS) is not properly configured. The POP3 connector may be unable to download mail from the POP3 server, and it may log the following error message in the Application log of Event Viewer:
ID:8001
Source: POP3 Connector
No DNS server found. Domain name resolution will fail, thus mail will not be properly delivered. Since there are no DNS servers around, we will default to regular WinSock calls.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur when Microsoft Exchange Connector for POP3 Mailboxes cannot locate a DNS server. The POP3 connector is unable to download messages from the server that is specified in the mailbox properties if it cannot resolve the server name by DNS name.
NOTE: The preceding error message can also be displayed if you have the Winsock Proxy Client installed on your SBS version 4.5 server. If this is the case, remove the Winsock Proxy Client by means of Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel before implementing any of the steps in the following resolution section.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this behavior, you must properly configure your SBS server for DNS by performing the following steps: For Full-time or Broadband Connections:
If you have a full-time Internet connection, such as, DSL, a cable modem, or a T-1 connection, configure your system settings with your Internet service provider's (ISP) DNS information by doing the following steps:
- Right-click Network Neighborhood and click Properties.
- Click the Protocols tab, and then double-click TCP/IP Protocol to bring up the properties sheet for TCP/IP.
- Click the DNS tab. Click the Add button under "DNS Server Search Order". Enter your ISP's primary DNS server's (Internet Protocol) IP address in the dialog box. Click Add to accept the entry.
- Repeat step 3 for any additional DNS servers that your ISP uses.
- Click OK to close the TCP/IP Properties dialog box. Click the Bindings tab to update the system's network bindings.

- Restart the server when prompted.
For Dial-up or Terminal Adapter Connections:
If you have a dial-up connection, use the following steps to configure DNS for your server:
- Click Start, click Dial-Up Networking, click Programs, click the Accessories folder, and then click Dial-Up Networking.
- Select the entry for the dial-up connection used by the POP3 connector. Then click the More button and click Edit entry and modem properties.
- When the Edit Phonebook Entry dialog box is displayed, click the Server tab, and then click TCP/IP Settings.
- Click Specify name server addresses.
- Enter your primary and secondary DNS server IP addresses in the dialog box. Leave the primary and secondary WINS address entries at their default entries (0.0.0.0), unless instructed otherwise by your ISP.
NOTE: Some ISPs dynamically assign a DNS server entry to dial-up clients. Contact your ISP to determine the appropriate setting for your network. - Click OK to close each dialog box.
The settings are updated the next time the connection is dialed.
