XL2000: Inserting Column Next to Merged Cells Causes Crash (259415)

SYMPTOMS

When you insert a column, Microsoft Excel may stop responding (crash) and you may receive one of the following error messages.

In Microsoft Windows 95 or Microsoft Windows 98

Excel has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.
If you click Details, you receive an error message similar to the following:
EXCEL caused a stack fault in module MSO9.DLL at 015f:308c3127

In Windows 2000

EXCEL.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program.

An error log is being created.
This error log is named Drwtsn32.log. The log contains an entry similar to the following:
Application exception occurred:

App: (pid=1192)
When: 4/10/2000 @ 11:30:24.891
Exception number: c00000fd (stack overflow)

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:
  • You have one or more merged cells.

    -and-

  • You have formatted the merged cells with rotated text.

    -and-

  • You insert a column to the left of the merged cells.

WORKAROUND

Remove the merged cell format, or format the cells so that the alignment is 0 degrees before inserting the column.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
