WD2000: Input Method Editor Characters Appear in a ToolTip Box Instead of the Document (259380)

SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade your computer to Microsoft Windows 2000, when you attempt to type Japanese or Korean characters, the characters appear in a ToolTip-type box and are not inserted into your Word document.

This problem has been reported to occur under the following circumstances:
  • You installed Microsoft Office 2000 by using the Upgrade Now option.

    -and-
  • You installed either the Japanese Global Input Method Editor (IME) 5.01 with Language Pack or the Korean Global Input Method Editor (IME) 5.01 with Language Pack on a Microsoft Windows 98 computer.

    -and-
  • You upgraded your Windows 98 computer to Microsoft Windows 2000.

WORKAROUND

To correct this problem, follow these steps:
  1. Quit Microsoft Windows 2000 and restart it in Safe Mode.For additional information about how to restart Microsoft Windows in Safe Mode, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

  2. In Safe Mode, point to Search on the Windows Start menu, and then click For Files or Folders.
  3. In the Search for files or folders named box, type Dimm.dll.
  4. Click Search Now.
  5. In the Search Results window, click to select Dimm.dll.
  6. On the File menu, click Rename.
  7. Type a new name for the file and press ENTER. For example, type Dimm.old.
  8. On the File menu, click Close to close the Search Results dialog box.
  9. Quit and restart Microsoft Windows the way that you usually do.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
