256986 Description of the Microsoft Windows Registry

SUMMARY

Exchange 2000 Conferencing Server provides two separate and distinct client connectivity methods when you participate in an audio or video conference, Internet Protocol (IP) Multicast, or the H.323 standard. This article explains how to force the H.323 standard.

MORE INFORMATION

Microsoft Windows 2000 natively supports both the IP Multicasting and H.323 standard while earlier version clients only support the H.323 standard. There may be scenarios in which Windows 2000-based computers do not have IP Multicast connectivity into a conference and must use the H.323 standard to participate successfully. To manually force a Windows 2000 client to use the H.323 standard instead of IP Multicasting, perform the steps described below.

NOTE: Perform these steps on the clients only, not the server.

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

Disabling IP Multicast Capabilities
  1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe)
  2. Locate the value under the following registry key:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Exchange Video Conferencing

  3. Click the Exchange Video Conferencing value, and then add the following entry and parameter if it does not already exists:
    1. On the Edit menu, click Add Value.
    2. Type the following information in the respective fields:
      • Value Name = MULTICASTDisable
      • Value Type = REG_DWORD
      • Data = 1
  4. Quit Registry Editor
If IP Multicast capabilities become available, simply change the preceding data value to 0 (zero) to re-enable IP Multicast capabilities.
