WD2000: Graphic in Word HTML Page Isn't Displayed in Some Web Browsers (259172)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 2000

This article was previously published under Q259172

SYMPTOMS

When you create a Web page in Microsoft Word 2000 and view it in either of the following browsers
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 or earlier

    -or-

  • Netscape Navigator 4.0 or earlier
graphics contained in the page are not displayed.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs if the Rely on VML for displaying graphics check box is selected in Word 2000. Internet Explorer 4.0 and earlier and Netscape Navigator 4.0 and earlier do not support the display of Vector Markup Language (VML) graphics.

When you select the Rely on VML for displaying graphics check box, Word takes less time to download a Web page and save it in HTML, and uses less disk space because graphic images aren't generated.

Only select this check box if Web pages are to be viewed in a browser that supports VML, such as Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 or later.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, save the graphic in Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) format. To do this, clear the Rely on VML for displaying graphics check box by following these steps:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. On the General tab, click Web Options.
  3. On the Pictures tab, click to clear the Rely on VML for displaying graphics in browsers check box, and then click OK twice.
  4. On the File menu, click Save.

MORE INFORMATION

VML is a system of marking up, or tagging, two-dimensional vector graphics for use in Web pages. VML graphics usually take less time to download and require less disk space. Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 supports VML graphics.
