This article was previously published under Q259064 SYMPTOMS
When you install Microsoft Visual Studio 6.0 on a hard disk that has Microsoft Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Millennium Edition, or Windows 2000 installed on the same partition, you may receive the following (or similar) error message:
msdasql.dll was unable to register itself in the system registry.
In fact, several dynamic link library (.dll) files cannot register themselves in the system registry. Other error messages refer to the following .dll files:
Msdaps.dll
Msdatt.dll
Oledb32.dll
Msador15.dll
Msadrh15.dll
Msado15.dll
Msdaora.dll
Msadds.dll
Msadce.dll
Msadco.dll
Msprst.dll
At the end of the installation, you may receive the following error message:
Visual Studio 6.0 setup was not completed successfully.
CAUSE
This behavior occurs when Windows 2000 is installed on the same partition as Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows Millennium Edition. The \Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared folder is overwritten with newer versions of these files.
RESOLUTION
We recommend that you divide the hard disk into multiple partitions, and then reinstall each operating system to a separate partition.
To install Visual Studio 6.0 without repartitioning your hard disk and reinstalling the operating system, you can perform the following steps. However, be aware that your operating system may still be unstable.
- Manually remove the incomplete Visual Studio 6.0 installation.
