SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade from Microsoft Windows 95 to Windows 98 or Windows 98 Millennium Edition (Me), there may be an unknown device listed as "PCI Raid device" in Device Manager. When this occurs, the primary and secondary controllers are displayed with exclamation points, indicating that they are not working. The IDE controller is listed as an Intel 82371/SB bus mastering controller that is working correctly. The system is in Compatibility mode. Updating the drivers for the primary and secondary controller does not correct the problem.

Or, you may receive the following message repeatedly when you try to start your computer:
System settings changed. You must restart now for the changes to take effect.

CAUSE

The PCI Raid device is a Promise Technologies Ultra 33 or 66 IDE controller. This device requires special drivers from the computer manufacturer or Promise Technologies. The drivers are not included with Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, or Windows Me.

RESOLUTION

Contact Promise Technologies for information about an updated driver.
