SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to set up a new Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) instance and select a remote shared store, usually a server, you may receive the following error message:
Bad Local Directory

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, complete the SMTP Instance (site) Wizard and create a new instance for a local directory. Then change the settings for this instance to point to a remote store or share:
  1. Click to expand this new instance.
  2. Click Directories.
  3. In the right pane, right-click Mailbox, and then click Properties.
  4. In the window that is displayed, change the virtual directory; click A share located on another computer. This allows you to enter a universal naming convention (UNC) network path in the following format

    \\server\share

to the share where your mail store is located.
You may need to use an account for authentication, such as a domain administrator account or a local account that is the same on both systems. To enter this authentication account and password, click Connect As.
