XL2000: Number Not Formatted As Expected with Percentage Format (257818)

SYMPTOMS

When you format a blank cell with the Percentage format and then type a number in that cell, the resulting entry may not be formatted as you expect.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because in Microsoft Excel, numbers that are typed in a blank cell that is formatted with the Percentage format are multiplied by 100 if you do not have the Enable automatic percent entry check box selected.

When Enable automatic percent entry is selected, and you format a blank cell with the Percentage format, not all positive numbers that you type in the cell are multiplied by 100.

RESOLUTION

If you want all numbers that you type in a Percentage-formatted cell to be multiplied by 100, follow these steps:

Start Microsoft Excel 2000.
On the Tools menu, click Options.
On the Edit tab, click to clear the Enable automatic percent entry check box, and then click OK.

If you do not want all numbers that you type in a Percentage-formatted cell to be multiplied by 100, follow these steps:

Start Microsoft Excel 2000.
On the Tools menu, click Options.
On the Edit tab, click to select the Enable automatic percent entry check box, and then click OK.
