"Use Default Gateway on Remote Network" Check Box Is Unavailable (254762)

This article was previously published under Q254762

SYMPTOMS

When you view the advanced TCP/IP properties of a demand-dial interface that is listed in the Routing Interfaces container in the Routing and Remote Access snap-in, the Use default gateway on remote network check box may be unavailable.

CAUSE

This option is available only when you are creating a standard dial-up networking connection in the Network and Dial-up Connections tool in Control Panel.

For a demand-dial interface, create instead a default route in the Static Routes container in the Routing and Remote Access snap-in that uses the appropriate demand-dial interface.

RESOLUTION

After you create the demand-dial interface in the Routing Interfaces container, follow these steps in the Routing and Remote Access snap-in:
  1. Open the IP Routing container, right-click Static Routes, and then click New Static Route.
  2. In the Interface box, click the appropriate demand-dial interface.
  3. In the Destination box, type 0.0.0.0.
  4. In the Network Mask box, type 0.0.0.0.
  5. The Gateway box is unavailable because it is unnecessary with a dial-up connection. Change the Metric box if necessary (this is typically not necessary), and then click OK.
