Visio5: When You Open a UML Diagram in Certain Situations, Visio Enterprise Does Not Open the UML Navigator or the UML Menu, and Shape Properties Are Not Available (254737)

RESOLUTION

If the file is marked as read-only, remove the read-only attribute from the file, or create a new copy of the file that you can modify. If the automation events for this UML diagram are disabled, enable them.

TIP: To determine if the UML diagram is read-only, open the file and look at the title bar. If the file is read-only, the title text has braces ( { } ) around it. For example, a read-only UML file named "Components and Constraints" appears as "{Components and Constraints }" in the title bar of the diagram.

If you are working with a read-only file and you do not want to modify the current copy, click Save As on the File menu, and then save the file with a different name. You can then work in a new copy of the file.

To remove the read-only attribute:

1. In Windows Explorer, right-click the UML diagram file.
   
   The Properties dialog box appears.
2. On the General tab, click to clear the Read-only check box, and then click OK.
3. Open the UML diagram.
   
   Visio Enterprise loads the UML Navigator and restores shape properties.

To enable automation events:

1. Open the UML diagram, and click Options on the Tools menu.
   
   The Options dialog box appears.
2. Click the Advanced tab, and click Enable Automation Events.
3. Click OK to save changes and to close the Options dialog box.
4. Save and close the UML diagram.
5. Reopen the UML diagram.
   
   The UML menu, UML Navigator, and shape properties are available again.
   
   NOTE: After you reopen the UML diagram, the following error message may appear:
   Visio's Add-on services encountered an error. You can continue running Visio. Click OK to continue.
   Click OK, and continue working as in Visio Enterprise.
   
   If the UML Navigator does not appear when you open a UML diagram, but the shape properties work correctly, click Show Navigator on the UML menu.
