Error Message: Sorry, Cannot Access Your Scanner (245639)

SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade your computer to Microsoft Windows 98 or Windows 98 Second Edition from Windows 95, the HP ScanJet 5100C scanner may not work.

The scanner icon on the taskbar may be displayed as a "Red X" or you may see the following error message:
Sorry, cannot access your scanner; your scanner is currently being accessed by another application. Please wait for the other application to finish, or close it to allow HP PrecisionScan access.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods:

Method 1

Remove the drivers from Device Manager, and then restart the computer.
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click System.
  2. On the Device Manager tab, click to expand the Other Devices branch.
  3. Click the HP ScanJet 5100C or HP C5190A scanner, click Remove, and then click OK.
  4. Click Close, and then restart the computer.
  5. When you restart Windows, you are prompted to insert the Windows 98 CD-ROM. Insert the Windows 98 CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, and then click OK.

    NOTE: If a file cannot be found, make sure that the Copy files from box reads drive:\Win98 where drive is the drive letter of the CD-ROM drive.

Method 2

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click System.
  2. On the Device Manager tab, click to expand the SCSI Controller branch.
  3. Click HP EPST Parallel SCSI Adapter, and then click Remove.
  4. Click OK, and then restart the computer.
  5. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add New Hardware.
  6. Click Next, click Next, select No, I want to select the hardware from a list, and then click Next.
  7. Click SCSI Controllers, and then click Next.
  8. In the Manufacturers box, click Shuttle Tech, click HP EPST Parallel SCSI Adapter in the Models box, and then click Next.
  9. Click Finish to complete the installation and then restart the computer if you are prompted.
  10. When you restart Windows, you are prompted to insert the Windows 98 CD-ROM. Insert the Windows 98 CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, and then click OK.

    NOTE: If a file cannot be found, make sure that the Copy files from box reads drive:\Win98 where drive is the drive letter of the CD-ROM drive.
