How to Open Other File Types

Open a Microsoft Works 4.5 File

To open a Works 4.5 file in Works 2000, you can use either of the following methods:
  • If the Works 4.5 file is located on the destktop, double-click the file to open it in Works 2000. If the Works 4.5 file is not located on the desktop, use Find or Microsoft Windows Explorer to find it, and then double-click the file to open it.

  • On the File menu, click Open, click to select the Works 4.5 file you want, and then click Open.

Open a Microsoft Word 2000 File

You do not need to convert Word 2000 documents to open them in Works Word Processor in Works 2000. To open a Word 2000 document in Works Word Processor:
  1. On the File menu, click Open.
  2. In the Files of type list, click Word 97-2000 (*.doc).
  3. Click to select the Word 2000 document you want, and then click Open.

Open an Excel File

You are able to open Excel (.xls) files directly in Works Spreadsheet in Works 2000. To open an Excel file in Works Spreadsheet:
  1. On the File menu, click Open.
  2. In the Files of type list, click Excel SS (*.xl*).
  3. Click to select the Excel document you want, and then click Open.

NOTE: Functions and formats created in Excel are converted to Works 2000 functions and formats. All of the data is retained, but objects, such as charts, are not.

How to Save Files as Other File Types

Save as a Microsoft Works 4.x or Microsoft 3.x File

To save a Works 2000 document as a file that you can open in either Works 4.x or Works 3.x:
  1. Start Works Word Processor.
  2. On the File menu, click Save As.
  3. In the Save as type list, click either Works 4.0 for Windows (*.wps) to save as a Works 4.x file type, or Works 3.0 for Windows (*.wps) to save as a Works 3.x file type.
  4. In the File name box, type a file name.
  5. Click Save.

Save as a Word 2000 File

To save a Works 2000 document as a file that you can open in Word 2000:
  1. Start Works Word Processor.
  2. On the File menu, click Save As.
  3. In the Save as type list, click Word 97-2000 & 6.0/95-RTF (*.doc).
  4. In the File name box, type a file name.
  5. Click Save.
NOTE: You can also save a file as a Microsoft Word 6.0 for Windows document by clicking Word 6.0/95 (*.doc) in the Save as type list.

Save As an Excel File

To save a Works 2000 spreadsheet as a file that you can open in Excel:
  1. Start Works Spreadsheet.
  2. On the File menu, click Save As.
  3. In the Save as type list, click the Excel file type that you want to save the spreadsheet as.
  4. In the File name box, type a file name.
  5. Click Save.
NOTE: Functions and formats created in Works 2000 are converted to Excel functions and formats. All of the data is retained.
