This article was previously published under Q244031 SYMPTOMS
During the setup of the Office Server Extensions, you may receive the following error message when the Microsoft Data Engine (MSDE) installation begins:
Cannot run the 16-bit program. The application is not supported by Windows
NT.
Attempting to install the MSDE manually by running Setupsql.exe generates the same error message.
CAUSE
This is caused by version 4.x of the Lzexpand.dll file. This file should not be on a computer running Windows NT.
RESOLUTION
After verifying the version, replace the Lzexpand.dll file in the \Winnt\System32 and \Winnt\System folders with the appropriate version, which is currently 3.10.0.103. To do this, do the following: - Right-click the Start button, and then click Explore.
- Rename the Lzexpand.dll file in both the \Winnt\System32 and \Winnt\System folders
- Insert the Windows NT CD into your CD-ROM drive.
- Click Start and, then click Run.
- Type "cmd" (without the quotation marks), and then click OK.
- Type the following command:
expand -r <cd drive letter>:\i386\lzexpand.dl_ <systemdrive
letter>:\winnt\system - Next, type the following command:
expand -r <cd drive letter>:\i386\lzexpand.dl_ <systemdrive letter>:\winnt\system32
Installation will now complete.
