PRJ2000: Subtasks Not Indented with Summary When You Edit Outline Level (242709)

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project 2000, when you increase the number in the Outline Level field of a summary task to indent the summary task under another task, the subtasks of the summary task are not indented with it.

CAUSE

When you increase the number in the Outline Level field for a summary task, Microsoft Project only indents the summary task that you are editing.

In most task views, such as the Gantt Chart view, when you do any of the following

drag a summary task to increase its outline number
use the Outline menu commands
use the Indent button on the Formatting toolbar

Microsoft Project indents both the summary task and all of its subtasks. The subtasks' outline numbers increase automatically when you use these methods. However, this behavior does not occur when you edit the Outline Level field for a summary task.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, use one of the following methods to indent a summary task and all of its subtasks.

NOTE: Method 1 is only valid in a task view such as the Gantt Chart or Task Usage view. Also, there are other methods to indent a summary task and its subtasks; method 1 is just one example.

Method 1: Use the Outline Commands on the Menu Bar (Preferred Method)

Select the summary task that you want to indent.
On the Project menu, point to Outline, and then click Indent.

Method 2: Edit the Summary Task's Outline Level and All of Its Subtasks

Increase the number in the Outline Level field to indent one summary task under another.
Repeat step 1 for all of the subtasks of the summary task that you are indenting.
