Cannot Upgrade Non-Shared Hard Disks on Cluster Server (242434)

SYMPTOMS

On a Windows 2000 Advanced or Datacenter Server with the Cluster service installed, you cannot upgrade shared disks to dynamic disks. The option is not available. You may also experience this behavior if you have a third or fourth SCSI bus in the computer and you attempt to upgrade hard disks on those SCSI buses.

CAUSE

This issue can occur because Windows 2000 cannot tell which SCSI bus is shared and which SCSI bus is not shared.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Windows 2000.

MORE INFORMATION

The SCSI bus that contains the system disk is the only bus that has the option to upgrade disks. The system disk bus is always local and never shared.

Windows 2000 Advanced Server and Datacenter server shipped from Microsoft do not provide support for dynamic disks in a server cluster (MSCS) environment. You can use the Volume Manager for Windows 2000 add-on product from Veritas to add the dynamic disk features to a server cluster. When you install the Veritas Volume Manager product on a cluster, Veritas is the first point of support for cluster issues.
